What Can I Expect During My Treatment?
Some patients say they feel stinging, like the snap of a rubber band on the skin. Some patients do not require topical anesthetics. However, most patients feel more comfortable if the area is iced before the treatment. Application of laser energy to the target tissue results in a whitish color change in the treated areas. On larger tattoo areas ice may be applied immediately after and then wrapped with clear bandage.
Will my tattoo be completely removed?
Tattoos vary in the type of ink used, colors, and depth of application. Black and red inks are generally the easiest to remove; blues and greens are moderate, while light colors such as yellow tend to be the hardest. Your laser technician will be able to tell you what type of results you can expect.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments required for optimal results depends on the size, location, depth and color of the tattoo. The average patient will need between 4-12 treatments. Treatments will be performed 4-8 weeks apart in order to allow your body to remove the tattoo ink fragments. As your body heals after each session you will notice your tattoo lightening; depending on the colors and ink used, many patients see a complete removal of the ink.
How long are the treatments?
Each session usually takes 10-30 minutes and will depend on the size of the tattoo. However, if your laser technician applies ice before hand, there will be extra time waiting for it to work.
Is there any downtime?
Typically there is no downtime. If we are treating a large area you may experience some swelling and discomfort in the area for 24-48 hours.
Does it hurt?
The majority of patients report little to pain. Most patients experience slight warming of their skin and a light prickling feeling.
